If you have a computer you currently run Windows 10 on andbuild yourself another, can you transfer the Windows 10 license to your newcomputer? This is a question we were asked in the store the other day. As itwasn't the first time we had heard it so we thought we would add a blog post tospread the word.
All the Windows license are now connected to users Microsoft account and the activation is done through online. Transferring a Windows license
Before Windows 10 came along, installing Windows onto a newcomputer meant either copying the code onto your new machine and everything wasfine or copying the code and seeing ‘already registered' errors and eitherhaving to call Microsoft or get help another way.

To transfer a Windows license you will need a copy of thelicense code if you bought the PC from a store. This will be with the paperworkor on a sticker somewhere on the computer. If you don't have a key, we can workaround that but it is better if you have one.
When you're ready to go, do this:
- Type ‘cmd' into the Windows Search box, rightclick Command Line window and select Open as Administrator.
- Type slmgr /upk' and hit enter.
This command disables the Windows 10 key for that computerand should allow you to transfer it to your new computer. Now it's time to useit.
You can either log into your new computer with yourMicrosoft account and the new version is picked up automatically or you mayneed to ‘encourage' it along a bit. Try logging in first and only try thefollowing if your copy isn't authorized within 48 hours. Check Settings, Systemand About to see its status.
On your new PC:
- Open a CMD window as above.
- Type ‘slmgr /ipk xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx'and hit Enter. Where you see xxxxx-xxxxx, type in your Windows 10 code youfound on the package, paperwork or sticker of your old computer.
- Type ‘slmgr /dlv' and hit Enter.
You should see a popup window with a load of text. Look forLicense Status and hopefully you should see Licensed next to it. If you do seeLicensed, you're all done!
If you don't see Licensed or don't have a key, you need todo a little more work.

- Log into your new Windows computer using yourexisting Microsoft account.
- Open a CMD window as above.
- Type ‘slui 4' and hit Enter.
- Select your region from the blue window thatappears and hit Next.
- Call the toll-free number on the screen and useyour phone keypad to enter the Installation ID on the screen.
- Type the Confirmation ID the system providesinto the boxes on screen and select Enter confirmation ID.
- Select Activate Windows.
